Please read Cardinal Collins’ Letter on the Pandemic, Sacramental Restrictions & Planning for a Return to Sacramental LifeIt offers some excellent points of reflection relevant to all Catholics East and West.

“Over the centuries the Church, following the commandment of Jesus to love our neighbour, has cancelled the public celebration of Mass in time of pestilence. Our ancestors may not have had as thorough an understanding as we do now of how epidemics spread, but they did know that in such a situation when people gather for any reason, even religious, they can spread infection and harm their neighbour.” Cardinal Collins

How to pray the Rosary in the Byzantine Tradition

Many people have strong opinions on the Rosary and that it is a latinizing influence on our Eastern Tradition which has the prayer rope, known as chotky, for praying the Jesus Prayer. Look at it from another perspective – is it wrong for Roman Catholics to have personal devotions to Eastern icons, to have them in their homes and to pray before them? Roman Catholics also pray the Jesus prayer. Does that mean they are being easternized? Certainly not – it is a recognition of the useful nature of this practice to grow in faith and deepen our relationship with our Lord. It is important to have a regular daily routine of personal prayer. Devotion to the Mother of God through the rosary is a wonderful way to grow spiritually and to bring the Grace of God into the world.

Prayers for the Domestic Church during Easter Season

The St. Demetrius Church Community Group (CCG) is posting Faith Break videos for kids preschool-10 on Facebook: click here to take a look.

What does the term “Domestic Church” mean, please read the following article:

What Should I do if I Can’t go to Mass?

Catholics are encouraged to make a ‘spiritual communion’. St. John Paul II writes that “it is good to cultivate in our hearts a constant desire for the sacrament of the Eucharist. This was the origin of the practice of ‘spiritual communion’, which has happily been established in the Church for centuries and recommended by saints who were masters of the spiritual life. Saint Teresa of Jesus wrote: ‘When you do not receive communion and you do not attend Mass, you can make a spiritual communion, which is a most beneficial practice; by it the love of God will be greatly impressed on you.’” (Ecclesia Eucharistia, no. 34) The faithful are also encouraged to watch streaming services from their local Parish, the local TV Sunday Mass or select from the links below to other streaming services.

How Do I Make a Spiritual Communion?

Below are recommendations for how to make a ‘spiritual communion’ when unable to participate in the Holy Sacrifice at the Divine Liturgy. The recommendations can be adapted based upon personal and family needs.

Gather with others in your household and begin a time of prayer with the sign of the cross.

Take time to read and reflect upon the readings from the Sunday Divine Liturgy. You can find the readings below. You may pray along with one of the services on our YouTube channel.

Share prayer intentions quietly or aloud.

Pray the Lord’s Prayer.

Pray one of the following prayers of spiritual communion.

Prayer for Spiritual Communion

My Jesus,  I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.  I love You above all things,  and I desire to receive You into my soul.  Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,  come at least spiritually into my heart! I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Close with the sign of the cross.

Pope Francis’ Prayer to Mary during the coronavirus pandemic

O Mary, you shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick.

At the foot of the Cross you participated in Jesus’ pain, with steadfast faith. You, Salvation of the Roman People, know what we need. We are certain that you will provide, so that, as you did at Cana of Galilee, joy and feasting might return after this moment of trial.

Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the Father’s will and to do what Jesus tells us: He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and bore our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen.

We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas – we who are put to the test – and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.

Prayer for the Time of Pandemic

Almighty and Eternal Lord, You do not want the sinner to die, but you want him to convert and live. You sent salvation through your only begotten Son, who commanded us, “Ask, and it will be given to you; search and find; knock, and they will open to you”.

Therefore, we fall before You and we tearfully pray to You: “Do not enter into judgment with us, but mercifully turn away Your righteous anger from us and subdue disease bringing death, that in these times affects the human race unexpectedly. Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us, and save your people, that they may live in good health according to Your commandments and glorify Your holy Name. Have mercy and visit the sick with this illness; lift them from their bed of infirmity and restore their spiritual and physical health; and the souls of those who have already passed away from this disease in the faith and hope of the resurrection, give them peace with your saints, where there is no pain, no sorrow, no sighing, but life everlasting. ”

By the prayers of the Most Holy Theotokos and ever virgin Mary, the protection of the honourable heavenly incorporeal powers and guardian angels, with the grace of your only begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom belongs all glory, honour, and worship with the eternal Father, and the Most Holy Spirit, now and forever and ever. Amen.
