Liturgy and Prayer

What Should I do if I Can’t go to Mass?

Catholics are encouraged to make a ‘spiritual communion’. St. John Paul II writes that “it is good to cultivate in our hearts a constant desire for the sacrament of the Eucharist. This was the origin of the practice of ‘spiritual communion’, which has happily been established in the Church for centuries and recommended by saints who were masters of the spiritual life. Saint Teresa of Jesus wrote: ‘When you do not receive communion and you do not attend Mass, you can make a spiritual communion, which is a most beneficial practice; by it the love of God will be greatly impressed on you.’” (Ecclesia Eucharistia, no. 34) The faithful are also encouraged to watch streaming services from their local Parish, the local TV Sunday Mass or select from the links below to other streaming services.

How Do I Make a Spiritual Communion?

Below are recommendations for how to make a ‘spiritual communion’ when unable to participate in the Holy Sacrifice at the Divine Liturgy. The recommendations can be adapted based upon personal and family needs.

Gather with others in your household and begin a time of prayer with the sign of the cross.

Take time to read and reflect upon the readings from the Sunday Divine Liturgy. You can find the readings below. You may pray along with one of the services on our YouTube channel.

Share prayer intentions quietly or aloud.

Pray the Lord’s Prayer.

Pray one of the following prayers of spiritual communion.

Prayer for Spiritual Communion

My Jesus,  I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.  I love You above all things,  and I desire to receive You into my soul.  Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,  come at least spiritually into my heart! I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Close with the sign of the cross.
