PARISH NEWS February 10 – 17, 2019

We extend a warm welcome to all our Parishioners and Visitors and invite you for a time of fellowship in the church hall following the Liturgy.

What God won’t ask? God won’t ask what kind of fancy car you drove. He will ask how many people you took to church who did not have transportation. God won’t ask the square footage of your house. He will ask how many people you helped who did not have a house. God won`t ask how many fancy clothes you had in your closet. He will ask how many of those clothes you gave to those in need. God won`t ask what social class you were in. He will ask what kind of “class”`you displayed. God won`t ask how many material possessions you had. He will ask whether those material possessions dictated your life. God won`t ask what your highest salary was. He will ask if you trampled over any people to obtain that salary. God won`t ask how much overtime you worked. He will ask if you really overtime for the benefit of your family. God won`t ask how many promotions you received. He will ask what you did to promote other people. God won`t ask what your job title was. He will ask if you performed your job to the best of your ability. God won`t ask how many promotions you took to chase a dollar bill. He will ask how many promotions you refused to advance your family`s quality of life. God wont`s ask you about how many times you didn`t cheat on your wife. He will ask how many times you did. God won`t ask how many degrees you had. He will ask how many people you thanked for helping you get those degrees. God won`t ask what your parents did to help you. He will ask what you did to help your parents. God won`t ask what you did to help yourself. He will ask what you did to help others. God won`t ask how many friends you had. He will ask how many people to whom you showed friendship. God won`t ask what you did to protect your rights. He will ask you what did to protect the rights of others. God won`t ask what neighborhood you lived in. He will ask what other neighborhoods you visited. God won`t ask how many times you told the truth. He`ll ask how many times you told a lie. God won`t ask about the color of your skin. He will ask about the color of your heart. God won`t ask how many times your deeds matched your words. He will ask how many times your deeds and words did not match.

Kitchen News. We will need help in the kitchen this Monday and Tuesday and we will be selling Borscht and Pyrohy this Sunday and Tuesday.

We extend our most sincere condolences to family and friends of Helen Hrabec and also deepest sympathies to Svitlana Yavorska with family at the falling asleep in Ukraine of her grandfather Roman. When we lose a loved one here on earth, we gain an angel in heaven that watches over us. May you take comfort in knowing that you have an angel to watch over you now. Please pray for the repose of their souls.

Prayers for Our Parishioners who are ill. Please contact the church office if you know of any that would like a priest to visit them.

We sadly announce the passing of Helen Gregorash, a founding member of our parish. The funeral will be in the care of Newediuk Funeral Home. Panakhyda will be held on February 20th at 7:30 pm and the Funeral will be held on the following day, February 21st at our church at 10:00 am the family has requested that those who wish may make donation in her memory to the church.

Theology of Lent: an eight-week class starting Feb 19. This class will go beyond the nuts and bolts of fasting and prostrations to explore the deeper meaning and purpose of Lent from an Eastern Christian perspective. We will approach Lenten season through Scripture, liturgy and the rich writings of the Saints of the Lenten season (St. Gregory Palamas, St. John Climacus, and St. Mary of Egypt). I am hoping that these classes will show you that the teachings of our church are as meaningful and profound today as they were a thousand years ago. Join us Tuesday nights from 7:00-9 in the Youth Room (Feb. 26th meeting cancelled and March 5th meeting will be in the church hall) at St. Demetrius. Crafts for Children, in the church hall. This Sunday February 10th, 2019 after each Divine Liturgy.

UCWLC is an organization which engages in various social and religious projects. It doesn’t take much time to enjoy the company of ladies who enjoy what they are doing. Why not come and see for yourself. Meetings are held on the second Monday of each month in the church hall at 7:00 pm. We start our meetings socializing followed by the business part. Members choose the events they wish to engage in. Our next meeting is on February 11th, 2019 at 6:30 pm. Deacon Shawn Goldman, speaker “Adventure to the Holy Land”.  All ladies welcome.

The St. Demetrius Women’s Circle is running a Winter Soup Drive from Sat. Jan 26th to Sun. Feb 10th, collecting in the church narthex, donated ‘Cans & Boxes of Soup’ for Etobicoke’s Youth Without Shelter’s Food Bank.

Ukrainian Canadian Women’s Council cordially invites the Ukrainian community to Svyato Heroyin to be held on February 10, 2019 at 3:00 pm at the Plast-Huculak Centre, 516 The Kingsway, Etobicoke. This year we are honouring Nurses who served on the Front Lines for Ukraine’s Freedom. The Ukrainian Drama Theatre Zahrava will be performing in this year’s Concert. Tickets: adults $20.00, students $10.00. Reception – coffee and cake.

Presentation of books about His Beatitude Lubomyr Husar’s maternal side, “It all begins with Mother” will be presented by Maria Rypan at the Toronto Ukrainian Genealogy Group (TUGG) meeting, in English Feb 12, 2019, 7:30 pm, St. Vladimir Institute, 620 Spadina Ave., Toronto and in Ukrainian Feb. 22, 2019 at 7:00 pm in St. Demetrius Church hall.

The Knights of Columbus will be hosting a retreat at Mount Mary Retreat Center, Ancaster in English for men, beginning Friday evening Feb 22 and ending Sun Feb 24 at noon. Open Your Heart to a compassionate assistance program supporting children of Ukrainian Fallen Soldiers. The project provides a stipend of $200.00 to each child who lost a parent in the turmoil. The funds are delivered personally to each child through the services of MEEST Corp. For information call: Oksana Iwanusiw 416-708-2028 or Danusia Witiuk 416- 556-4645. Donors will receive receipts for taxable purposes.
